Stammering

It is a speech disorder in which the flow of speech is disrupted by involuntary repetitions and prolongations of sounds, syllables, words or phrases. It is a complex condition in which there are pauses that interrupt the flow and timing of the speech. It is common, especially in children.

Causes:

  • Neurogenic or psychogenic
  • Family genetics
  • Environment and physical factors

Symptoms:

  • Difficulty starting a word, phrase or sentence
  • Brief silence for certain syllables or words or pauses
  • Lip tremors
  • Excessive blinking
